What is the ideal age to start playing the drums?
The answer to this question is not so simple. There is no ideal age, it is possible to start playing the drums at any age.
Nevertheless, the approach to the instrument will necessarily be somewhat different depending on the period of life in which one begins.
From 3 to 5 years old : musical awakening
This period is perfect to start getting familiar with music in the broadest definition.
Here, there is no need to focus on getting to master an instrument, or even a particular instrument.
The important thing is first and foremost to start discovering the first sensations provided by music.
The most effective way to do this is to take non-formal, group lessons, which allow participants to begin to discover the communicative properties of music.
It is also the perfect time to start identifying the first rhythms, and to learn how to differentiate the instruments.
Between 6 and 8 years old: starting an instrument
That’s it, from the age of 6, it is now possible to really start practicing an instrument.
Very often, children will start with the piano.
It is true that it is a popular instrument for many reasons: it allows them to work on melody, harmony and rhythm, and to take their first steps in musical practice.
This age group is also perfect to start playing the drums: get familiar with the instrument, discover the sound of the different elements, and start having fun with it.
Obviously, one should not seek mastery of the instrument at this age, although it is possible to practice seriously and regularly.
It is also an ideal way to let off steam, and to channel a good part of the almost inexhaustible energy of our dear little ones!
9 years old and more : learn the drums seriously
It is from around 9 years old that the serious business gets started.
If your child hasn’t started the drums yet, now is the right time: it is possible to try out a larger instrument that requires more physical capacity.
This age is ideal to start taking more serious lessons, which will focus on mastering the drums.
It is of course possible to start at any age. Starting young certainly allows you to acquire the right skills very early on, and makes learning easier.
However, nothing prevents you from starting to play, whether you are 20, 40 or 60 years old: in any case, this passion will follow you all your life!
